Seabiscuit is scratched from racing at Suffolk Downs.
June 29, 1938
The horse is withdrawn 40 minutes before the Massachusetts Handicap, disappointing a record crowd of 66,000 at Suffolk Downs, since Seabiscuit was to have faced 1937 Triple Crown winner War Admiral in the race. The explanation for the horse’s withdrawal is given as a tendon injury, but there is speculation that the real reason is to avoid running him in wet conditions. The two horses compete in a match race later in the year, with Seabiscuit winning the Pimlico Special in Baltimore on November 1, 1938.
